November 2023

Issue 02

#k3 pride newsletter

Hello!

Heading into the holiday season, it’s an emotional time. Some people feel the grief of loss and find themselves very lonely this season. We are here to tell you that you’re not alone! And we hold our monthly meet-ups in spite of the holidays to make sure you have a place to go and people here for you. November is a busy month, and December will surely be even busier! We’re so excited for 2024, there is so much in store for the network!

COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE!

The first Sunday of each month, we meet for coffee & community at a local Starbucks. The group has continued to grow and we’re beginning to outgrow the space! It’s always a good group, with great conversation! Everything from religion to exchanging pet pictures! If you’re interested, join us at 9am at Starbucks located at 532 Main Street NW, Bourbonnais!

TRANS DAY OF REMEMBERANCE

November 20th is Trans Day of Remembrance. A day to honor trans & non-binary people lost to anti-trans violence around the world, as well as heartbreaking suicides. In 2023, over 350 trans and non-binary people have lost their lives to hate crimes. This TDOR, the Network partnered with our friends at Uplifted Care for a candlelight vigil, as well as a time for reflection and action.
Participants also took the time to write letters to LGBTQ youth in other states whom we partnered with to deliver letters of support and encouragement. This is an important show of solidarity & community for young people who have been targeted with anti-LGBTW legislation and rhetoric.

Check out our LGBTQ Network ‘friendship bracelets” tree at the Northfield Square Mall in the Christmas Tree Wonderland all holiday season! The tree features pride-colored friendship bracelets to signify our mission of connection and community! Friendship bracelets were a big hit at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour this year!

We’re often encouraged to hear people share how meaningful it is to see LGBTQ/Pride displays at local events, and it means the world to us! It’s exactly what we hope to achieve! As your people who grew up in this community with little to no representation, we’re honored to provide it

This month, we also launched our fundraising and donations pages for Giving Tuesday! Our organization currently solely runs on donations and volunteers! We were overjoyed to raise over $800 on Giving Tuesday Alone! Donations currently help to sustain the website we have in development and fund the teen group’s safe location, activity costs, and supplies, just to name a few things. Donations can be made at any time at our PayPal Donation page.

This month, we celebrated Transgender Awareness Week! Though so much progress has been made for LGBTQ Americans, transgender and gender-nonconforming people still face marginalization and discrimination, even by some in the LGBTQ community. Check out of list of helpful definitions this month!
